For an innovative and responsible AI
Artificial intelligence is transforming our societies at an unprecedented speed. While its benefits are undeniable, particularly in terms of research, improving productivity and optimizing resources, its deployment poses major challenges, particularly in terms of data protection: massive collection, discriminatory bias, lack of transparency, fully automated decision-making, or even risks of identity theft.
Faced with these challenges, the CNIL is taking action to build a framework of trust that guarantees the protection of fundamental rights, while enabling the development of an innovative and responsible European AI industry.
To coincide with the Summit for Action on Artificial Intelligence, to be held in Paris from February 6 to 11, the CNIL is stepping up its actions and taking part in a number of strategic events.
Marie-Laure Denis, Chair of the French Data Protection Authority (CNIL), will attend the International Summit at the Grand Palais, and will take part in a round table discussion on the theme of "Cyberattacks and information integrity: leveraging AI to protect democracies". Discussions will focus on the role of AI in cybersecurity and the fight against information manipulation, and how to ensure the secure and ethical development of these technologies.
A strong mobilization of the CNIL during side events
February 11 - Data governance and AI
In partnership with the Data Protection Authority of South Korea (PIPC), the CNIL is co-organizing the event "Trustworthy and Accountable Data Governance in the AI Age: Data Privacy Perspectives" under the auspices of the OECD. This meeting will be an opportunity for both authorities to reaffirm their commitment to responsible governance of artificial intelligence, and to promote the protection of personal data on an international scale. On this occasion, a joint declaration will be signed by the data protection authorities taking part in the event. This commitment will symbolize their desire to strengthen their cooperation and reaffirm their willingness to establish solid principles for the ethical and trusted use AI.
February 11 - Station F: raising awareness of AI issues among professionals
At the Business Day organized by France Digitale at Station F, the CNIL will be speaking alongside the ANSSI (French national cyber agency), DGCCRF (Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention) and DGE (General Directorate for Entreprises) to raise awareness among companies and startups of the obligations of the AI regulation, which will gradually come into force from summer 2024. The governance provided for by the regulation and mechanisms for collaboration between the various national players responsible for enforcing it will be also discussed.
January 31 - AI-related transformations in the liberal professions
Thomas Dautieu, Director of Legal Support, spoke at the 32nd National Congress of the Liberal Professions, organised by the National Union of the Liberal Professions (UNAPL) on Friday 31 January at the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE) in Paris. The day’s debates addressed the transformations linked to the integration of artificial intelligence into the liberal professions.
January 23 - Protecting people's voice and image in the age of AI
In anticipation of the AI Summit on January 23, the CNIL co-organized a parallel event with the University of Caen Normandie and the University Paris-Saclay, entitled "Protecting people's voice and image in the age of AI" . Speeches and round tables brought together industry professionals and researchers to discuss ways of preventing misinformation, fraud and privacy breaches, while leveraging AI.
Other parallel events
In addition to its interventions at the heart of the Paris AI Summit, CNIL is actively involved in several parallel events, bringing together international experts to discuss the key challenges of artificial intelligence.
On February 11, CNIL will be present at two major events:
- Félicien Vallet, Head of Artificial Intelligence Department, will be speaking at a round table organized by Datasphere at the International Chamber of Commerce to explore the use of sandboxes, a key tool for testing and framing the development of AI systems.
- Michel Combot, Director of Technology, Innovation and Artificial Intelligence, will also take part in a discussion organized by law firm Clifford Chance as part of the AI Fringe, on confidence in AI in the face of the geopolitical, economic and regulatory challenges of 2025.
On February 7, Éric Delisle, Head of the Department of Social Affairs, Local Authorities, Sport and the Environment, will take part in a round table at the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE) on the civic dimension of AI development and the role of social dialogue in the face of its growing deployment.
On January 21, Elisabeth Barsacq, Head of European and International Affairs attended a roundtable discussion at the German Embassy on Franco-German cooperation for AI at the service of the common good. This dialogue reflects the importance of a concerted European approach to AI governance.
